Best practice for assembly reference set

Hi,
I'm involving to create the best practice for our company, because we are in lot and every CAD user use her head to model and so on.
I read and I didn't found the thread where John Baker suggest to use an assembly template with only 'Empty' and 'Entire part'.
Can some one help me, linking this thread to understand the reason ?
Sincerely I like this idea, but when I create the drawing, the reference set of the assembly is created automatically.

Are you working in a Master Model Drawing? If so, when you say "...the reference set of the assembly is created automatically", are you talking about the Drawing file, which of course is an Assembly itself? That's not the 'assembly' I was talking about. I was talking about the 'assembly' that was ADDED to the Master Model Drawing file as a Component itself. That's the one that you should have left with only the default 'Empty' and 'Entire Part' Reference Sets.

sorry for the delay, but I'm testing NX8 before to install in all PC.
I'm also studying the pro and con for some best practice guidelines.
Can you help me writing the reason why assembly doesn't have 'model' reference set ?

Another question is :
Better setup for sketch or plane layers or use hide command ?

I've explained that in the past at least a dozens times. Trust me, if you can avoid it, never create any new Reference Sets in an Assembly File. You'll regret it someday if you do. Reference Sets are FILTERS and when these filters are applied down some branch, at the sub-assembly level (which means that it's an assembly file) it will eventually come back and cause problems. You are just better off letting the system set the Reference Sets for you, which means that only Bodies get included in the Model Reference Set and no additional Reference Sets ever get created in the Assemblies.

Hi John,
I understand you, but remember that the guidelines are for users that use NX from V11.
Say that 'Model' reference set in the assembly is not necessary and add a new template (assembly), I must write something very very incontestable.
Can you link me some Eng-Tips topics ?

Here goes... I am trying to build my assemblies with all components set to the Model reference set. The only thing that I miss are the component coordinate systems. I often use the default coordinate planes and axis to constrain my components in the assembly.

Soo, I have been adding the coordinate system to the Model reference set so it is available to use. I have done this in my template part so as I create new parts the Model set already includes the default coordinate system.

I haven't experienced any problems relating to this so far but is there a down side to doing this?

I am using 7.5.2.5 NATIVE on Dell with windows XP OS

Only the question of what to do with them after they are no longer needed. I have used the "Entire Part" reference set to use any locational tools (coordinate systems, datums, axes, etc), then changed it to "Model" once the component is properly located/constrained. This makes for a "cleaner" model.
