Hi Guys,

Can someone explain if a WPS based on ASME B31.3 also applicable to used for production welding based on ASME B31.1?

For the most part, yes. Both require procedures according to ASME IX. We coomonly used WPS's riginally qualified to ASME IX for use in B31.3 applications on our Power projects where piping is per B31.1.

I thought the the "WPS" could be the same but the B31.1 piping should be welded by a qualified "Code Welder".

One should consider whether the thickness required for the new application requires CVN and or post weld heat treatment. That check the existing WPS and PQR to see if it is still applicable considering the thickness range, PWHT, and CVN requirements. Check the other essential variables as well.

Best regards - Al
