I have been investigating ceramics for high thermal loading and have come accross papers describing thermal shock resistance for laminate and fibrous monolith ceramics (from Clegg and Halloran). They seem to give good results, but I am unsure about there use in structural applications. Does anyone know if it is "proven technology"?

Yes, but it is the cost that gets it into trouble.

Rotating bearing balls and rollers
Cutting tools
Engine moving parts — valves, turbocharger rotors
Engine wear parts — cam followers, tappet shims
Turbine blades, vanes, buckets
Metal forging dies
Precision shafts and axles in high wear environments
Weld positioners
