Do not yet have copy of D1.6 but would appreciate help with the following. Note, all material is 316SS, all plate construction.

What filler metal should be specified?

What is the tensile strength of this filler?

Is the allowable shear stress for stainless welding calculated the same as carbon steel, i.e 0.3(Tensile strength)? If not, what is the allowable per AWS?

316 filler metal comes in several forms. If you just specify the chemical composition as 316 or 316L, then it leaves the fabricator to choose the appropriate process.

316 = 75 ksi min tensile
316L = 70 ksi min tensile

This goes for stick electrodes (A5.4), flux core wire (A5.22), and solid wire (A5.9 although only in the appendix)
