I am interested in opinions regarding the practicality of dehydrating a sweet light (40 API) crude oil to a BS&W content of 0.5% using a horizontal three-phase separator fitted with high efficiency coalescing media. The emulsion forming tendency of the crude is very favorable. The crude viscosities are low and it is intended to operate the separator at 90 deg C to create good separation conditions. Fluid shear upstream of the vessel will be minimized by careful design of the upstream piping. Any experiences with similar separations are most welcome.

I should also have stated that the incoming crude oil will have a BS&W of between 5-10%. Bulk oil & water separation is carried out in an upstream three phase separator.
