NX9: Edit appended Text

Hi Guys,

In NX8.5 we had the procedure to change from a dimension the value and change it to a letter which was then referred to in a table (Tabulated drawings)

Procedure for this was to;

[ol 1]
[li]Rightclick on dimension[/li]
[li]select "edit appended text"[/li]
[li]select dimension value (it appears in text field of edit appended text menu)[/li]
[li]Substitute dimension value for Letter (system gives a warning you are about to change it, select ok)[/li]
[/ol]

This seems no longer possible in NX9.0.3.4 (not sure on other releases of NX9)

Is this as designed? If so, any other suggestions onhow to accomplish this? New functionality which we are not aware of?

Hey,

In NX 9.0 procedure is:

1. Select dimension
2. RMB - Settings
3. Text - Format
4. Override Dimension Text
5. Click Icon "A"
6. Change text.

One extra mouse gesture for an infrequent task, which if it's really done more often, can now be captured as a journal, something that was not possible prior to NX 9.0.

Didn't count the mouse clicks yet John, but if you say so it probably will be...just feels more cumbersome...

And the Journaling would be nice indeed...I'll try 2morrow

I wouldn't expect to be able to override the dimension value by going into the "edit appended text" dialog. Seems like a loophole that got closed. On the rare occasion that I need to override dimension text, I use Edit -> annotation -> text, and select the dimension.

See EWH's note. It still applies / works in NX9 and NX10. ( Using the "menu pulldown") As such it's the fewest clicks because you can select dimension after dimension when the menu is on screen.
The cool thing is that one can revert back and forth by the steps that MANox describes.

Pre-NX 9, you could convert a manual dimension back to an associative one by double clicking the dimension, right click -> "convert to automatic".

True dat. I'm not sure if the above quote was in response to my comment; but if so, I'd just like to clarify:
My previous comment was for anyone looking to convert a manual text dimension back to automatic text in NX 8.5 or lower. I don't remember offhand, but I don't think there is a checkbox option in the settings for it like there is now in NX 9. I kind of stumbled across the "convert to automatic" option when working in NX 7.5 (or maybe it was 8). I thought there must be a way to convert a dimension back to automatic text, but the method wasn't as obvious before NX 9 (not as obvious to me, at least).

That's of the issues that we constantly strive for, making functionality 'discoverable'. And before anyone comments, the focus is on the new or occasional user, not the person who will claim that he remembers the old way so he doesn't need it to be 'discoverable' for him. Sorry, but that's not the issue at play here. We have to make NX easy to learn and use by as broad a set of people as possible which include everyone who has yet to use NX.
