Hi

I need to find the maximum allowed flow rate for fuel oil in steel pipes

I'm looking forward to getting some help

As a rule of thumb, the velocity of the fuel oil should be kept between 2 to 3 meters per second.

I know about the thumb rule, but can anyone tell me why its 2-3 meter per second and not 4-5? and where I can find information about the subject?

By allowed I’m thinking about ship classification companies

 
I would reccommend that and engineering/economic feasibilty study be performed. General rules are fine for guides, however, stockholders/ consumers need the best they can get with regard to the environment, safety and cost.

A good many economic studies (such as suggested by Sailoday) have been made over the years, and the 2-3 meters per second has been determined to be the best compromise between pipe capital cost and pump operating costs. Of course, there may be special circumstances in specific cases that might warrant yet another economic study.

Another factor to be aware of is that higher velocities increase pipe erosion problems.

All in all, the 2-3 meters per second rule of thumb has served many of us well for many years.

In the storage tank world the flow rates will be kept to about 2 to 3 feet per second (not metres per second)if discharging into an empty tank. This is done for safety reasons due to a build up of static charges. Once the discharge end of the pipe is submerged normal flow rates are resumed.
