I am quoting for Mold design. How much time is average for a mold design to be done?

I have some customers and they are asking me to quote various things. Solids and a four drawing layout. Or Solids and complete detailing etc. Complete detailing takes a lot of time and seems to be 2-3 times the price of no detailing.

To try to remain competitive time estimating is really important. As a contract designer you don't know who you are competing against or what there prices are.

Customers also have a tendency to bend the truth as to how much time these take or how much they cost. Trying to live up to something unrealistic is very difficult.

More time = better quality not less.

I have been keeping a good log of time for each mold so to gauge this better (more scientific also).

Any other suggestions for estimates?
What is average for these designs?

Hi,

The tool designer (in UK) known to me simply agrees a percentage of the price the toolmaker charges for the tool. I think it is around 10 per cent.
