Question: Is it acceptable to design a wood beam for the shear at 'd' from support?

I researched this topic, here and elsewhere, but was unable to find a good answer.

This thread ( had good explanations for steel and concrete, but wood fell off the topic.

It seems reasonable to me that a wood beam would shear off more vertical than concrete. Whether or not it shears right at the support, I don't see why it would need to go at least 45 degrees.

Although I am unable to explain the specifics, many of the timber shear failures I've seen have in fact been at some angle from the vertical (and generally more than 45 from the vertical).

Yes. NDS allows it but with limitations. See 3.4.3.1

Pff now I feel dumb. That's the first place I should have looked. Thank you!
