One of my vendors wants to preheat using coke gas for a P1 welding procedure. I have never heard of this gas being used for preheating. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using this gas as opposed to natural gas preheating?

Did you ask how they intend to use this gas for preheating? Why do they want to use coke gas?

If the flame is not 'sooty' it is just another fuel gas - albeit one that usually has significant ammounts of carbon monoxide in it. I feel sorry for the welders & fitters, but if it is burned cleanly, it is just another fuel gas.
