Billboard/Signboard Rigid Base Plate Connection

Hello,

We are working on a fairly decent sized billboard and have come up against some trouble finding any information on designing the rigid baseplate connection.
The billboard is supported using a single column (1016 SHS). We are thinking we will use hold down bolts embedded fairly deeply into a very large reinforced pad footing.

I've read through the forums and haven't seen any information based on Australian codes. Has anyone had any experience, or can offer up any advice?

I know it is not the governing code in Aus, but AISC Design Guide No1 has a pretty solid walk-through for base plate design. I am sure you can find a free version online with a few searches.

Personally I think they have a step in their process which is over conservative but that isn't a bad thing and leads to a small amount of extra thickness (little cost for added strength)

The Eighth edition of the AISC Steel Design Manual had some good examples too. I used those to design base plates for a high rise back in '82.

FYI... Many of the anchor bolts I have designed have extended down into Australia. Maybe you could tie into those... As for the base plates, well, they are thick, but not that thick.
