Tilt Up Panel Base Connection

Hi all,
Just wanted to know whether there are any problems in providing a tilt up panel at structural slab level (floor level) with anchors on to footing at floor level. (Top of footing and top of slab are at same level)

While a did nod towards @Greenalleycat's comment, I do concur with Tomfh. If a design level seismic event does occur in Sydney or Melbourne it would be a very rude awakening. There would be deaths and likely collapses of some old structures. But nothing on the scale of Christchurch.

Our design levels only call a PGA of 0.08g-0.10g. In Christchurch the the PGA was an order of magnitude higher.


That kind of scenario just isn’t on the table for the eastern seaboard. Our geology doesn’t allow it.
I'm not sure of the veracity of that. Many geologists would disagree. We have had some pretty strong seismic events dotted about our vast land. In fact it is often acknowledged that the Australia-Indo has the higher intraplate stresses of all the continental plates. And there certainly is plenty of faults and recorded events on the eastern seaboard.

My knowledge of the potential severity of "a big one" is limited. But most seismologists would also admit the same too.

Of course what we can fairly confidently is that the recurrence rates of strong events is significantly lower compare to places like New Zealand with a dirty great plate boundary beneath it.

Yes, Christchurch had PGA's exceeding 2G. Newcastle '89 was ~0.2G (a 1 in 2500 year event). The return period for a 0.2G quake in Sydney is more like 100,000 years.

The video I linked with collapsed facades etc was post September 2010 quake though which was much lower PGA (in Christchurch itself)
PGAs in Colombo St were on the order of 0.20g for September 2010
The photos were post February 2011 though

The PGAs exceeding 2g were very localised effects around the hills a) near the epicentre b) amplified for local effects of ridges etc
Largest PGAs in the city were more like 0.60g, and lots of the city was 0.20-0.50g
PGA for the CTV site (building which killed 100+ people) was ~0.45g
