I work at a company that manufactures heat exchangers to ASME code Section 8, Div 1.
A big part of my job is estimating machining hours for major components like tubesheets, etc., and I seek a method to be more accurate in those estimates by having using well-researched machining time factors based on the material.

There seem to be machinability indices out there for non-code material designations like AISI steel grades, however, I don't know how to cross reference those to the ASME code material designations that are used in pressure vessel construction, SA-516-70 plate for example. Does anybody know if such cross reference exists? Below is the example of what I have found for AISI material machinability index.

Does a cross reference exist? Certainly, ASTM publishes one, but it costs. There must be some free ones available somewhere...

Alternately, but slower, is development of your own knowledge of nominal compositions and strength levels between the two systems.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
