Stainless steel welding code

Research has indicated that AWS D1.6 is for welding SS. I do not have a copy of this code but have a few questions.

Is D1.6 a stand alone code like D1.1 or is it suppliment? Basically need to know if I should hold the fabricator to the requirements of D1.1 with additional supplements per D1.6?
