Yield line patterns

Dear collages,

In this moment I'm assessing the behaviour of bolted steel connections. I want to know different yield line patterns that can ocurr. I have read some about it: theory of Johanssen is pionery in this field. But also I have read about to obtain the yield line patter for a configuration of bolts through optimization of a function. Anybody could give to me references about it, or about technics to obtain yield line patterns?

The is more literature for reinforced concrete yield line theory compared with steel - at least for the practicing structural engineer. Refer to MacGregor's Reinforced Concrete textbook (Prentice Hall).
For a steel reference, Bill (William) Thornton has some practical papers.

Thank you very much for your answer. I have been searching the references that you told me, and they are very interesting. But I would like to know if it exists a software that evaluate yield line patterns acocrding to boundary conditions and loads in the plate (puntual, lineal, etc).

What you are really asking for is finite element analysis (FEA) software, which by definition is the best of the lower bound solutions and the upper bound solutions (strip analysis and yield line analysis).
Any FEA software with plate elements will do the trick, although "thick" plates will capture thru-thickness shear effects properly, but simple FEA packages with only thin plate formulations will probably work for what you're looking for.

Thank you very much for your answer. But I knew some of theses publications. What I'm looking for is related to them, but I want to know if it exists a procedure to evaluate what are the patterns that can be developed in a structure with boundary conditions.

I`m going to ilustrate what I'm looking for with an example. In a D region in reinforced concrete, steel reinforcement has to be calculate with an estimated design. To evaluate the design of theses armours, it can be made by software, I send to you a link:


So, similar to the problem of yield lines, I would like to kwno if is there any software which can evaluate the design of theses yield lines (theses images are for 2D elastic analysis loaded in plane; in my case it would be plates loaded in the transverse direction and in the collapse regime.

I don't know if you are already find the information you are looking for by now.

The design method that you are qouting it is only mandatory on Special Moment Frame "SMF" and Intermedia Moment Frame "IMF".

You can find some information about that including formulas in the reference AISC 358-05 - Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications in the CHAPTER 6, BOLTED UNSTIFFENED AND STIFFENED EXTENDED END-PLATE MOMENT CONNECTIONS.

The chapter opnly show end plate yield lines, f course you can use this theory to design the plates of other joints.

Hi 3JC,

I run a company that is developing limit analysis software that may be used for reinforced concrete and metallic plate structures. It includes the upper-bound yield line analysis method and a complementary lower-bound equilibrium method. Using both gives a bounded solution on the collapse load hence confidence in the result.
