we have a WPS P8-P8 , did all testing required (tensile, bends etc). question , based on QW 432.1 it is my understanding that we can test welders under this WPS using P1-P8 ,P8-P44 coupons , if the coupon test pass (RT) then the welder is qualified to weld any combination of these P1-p11,P34,P41 thru P49 . what say you folks.

QW423.1 allows alternate base metals to be used for qualifying welders, but, you need to review QW350 for essential variables applicable to welder qualification.

In addition to the P Nos, you must also review the filler metals; e.g., assuming your WPS used an F6, A-8, welding filler metal. Your welder was qualifed on P No.1 coupons with E/ER309 filler metal. He may not weld P4X materials using F4X filler metals.

I agree you would have to follow the essential veriables of the orginal WPS but you would not have to created another WPS thanks guys

bhart,
There are separate essential variables applicable to the qualification of welders that must be adhered to. These have nothing to do with the essential variables for a WPS.
See QW350.

In other words, the broad variables you first quoted *just* apply to welder qualification -- Performance -- testing.

You are still required to have a WPS -- Procedure -- qualified to the appropriate Essential Variables. Those variables are much, much narrower.
