Hi everyone,
i put my case in front of welding professionals.
suppose i have a pipe 6"x15.88, APIL 5L X60.
i want welding procedure qualification for 6"x8mm.

my question is, can i reduce the thickness of 6"x15.88 to 8mm by machining till up to HAZ or little more, just to qualify for 6"x8mm because qualification of 6x15.88, i am not getting the thickness of 8mm in thickness range as per API 1104.

if it is allowed, which clause and code exactly allows the machining of high thickness to low thickness to cover or qualify for low thickness range

Thanks in adnavce.

Machining till HAZ? Machining should be done before welding, or am I reading your questing wrong?

@ kingnero (Mechanical).

machining before welding to reduce the thickness for qualification of WPS for low wall thickness. because material for low wall thickness is not available,

so my quation is, is it allowed to machine down to low wall thickness for welding procedure qualification?

thanks

Agree with kingnero. However, if you’re looking for a clause in the code that allows this, there isn’t one.

Just machine down your pipe to the desired thickness and record it on the PQR.

The devil is in the details; she also wears prada.
