hello every one?

i have a question

which heat treatment style(surface hardening)used in gear train of high speed rails transmission system(like TGV\ICE\shinkansen etc.)

do they use induction hardening or carburization & quenching? even nitriding ?

SAME the question to gear train of wind-powerd electricity generation used in Europe and USA?

Hi peuray
It depends of the material you are using, and depends of the grade of surface hardening you want to obtain. With ion nitriding according to AMS 2759/8 you can obtain a surface hardness of 50-52 HRC with difussion zone up to 0.89mm of deep. Don´t forget that all heat treatable steels to be nitrided shall be hardened and tempered prior to nitriding.

For wind turbine gear box components;

planetary gears - carburizing method for surface hardening
ring gear - induction hardening and some manufacturers also nitride the gear teeth surface.
