Have a 66 inch steel discharge header at a pump station. Want to connect a 36 inch pipe perpindicular to the 66 inch. The outer edge of the 36 inch intersects a mitered welded elbow of the 66 inch discharge header. Is there a minimum clearance required by code between the two welded joints?

Really need more info to answer properly. ASME provides the most widely accepted guidance for piping systems. B31.1 for Power piping, b31.3 Process piping, etc... These and API 1104.

I my experience you want to keep a minimum of 3" between welds. this is so you don't get overlapping heat effected zones (cause the effected zone to be brittle). BUT you can post heat treat the connection if you have to make this connection. Good Luck! ...Mark
