Can someone tell me what AWS D1.1 says about field welding of shear studs for composite beams? A job we are working on the contractor has fillet welded the studs to the beams.

Thanks.

Studs can be welded with fillet welds per AWS 7.5.5, but all the criteria of that section. If there is metal deck involved I am not sure if the criteria can be met, because the stud has to fit against the base metal which is the beam and the metal deck would be in the way.

Also there is minimum size of fillet required depending on the diameter of the stud this is located in table 7.2

Also to check them you have to bang one with a hammer to a 45 dergree angle and inspect the welds.

Not a very technical procedure, but it works per CWI.

So the contractor doesn't want to rent the stud welding gun?
