Hi, I have not dealt much with stainless weldments. What yield strength can be expected to be left in the heat affected zone of my welded joints? I need these numbers for calcs on a stainless frame I am designing that will have a small picker crane on top. Thx!
The good news is that for austenitic stainless steels, like 304, these are non-hardenable grades by heat treatment. Assuming the stainless steel is in a solution treated condition, the HAZ would exhibit nearly the same YS values as solution treated base material.
But at least it is the same yield that was used in the design.
Many grades have a 30ksi min yield, and they typically come in 35-45ksi for actual properties.
