Hi everybody,

as a supplier of Flare systems, we usually assemble the Flare Tip with body made in SS 310 welded to flange in 316L by using filler material ER310/E310XX; now one of our client says that they don't accept ER310/E310XX type indicating us to follow API RP 528 Table C.1, where is indicated as acceptable filler material for 310 to 316L welding 310 or 309 type.

i'm not so confident in using a 309 filler material for welding 310 to 316L, i would stay with ER310/E310XX; can anybody please help me to clarify this also from a metallurgical point of view?

Thanks

ER/E309 is fine for the weld. So would be ER/E316. ER/E310 has a greater possibilty of hot cracking due to lack of ferrite in deposit.

I'm not much into welding engineering, but I recall that ER309 shouldn't be used for such DMW if the application runs at high temperatures.

310 welded to 316L does not scare me concerning low ferrite welds.
309 isn't my favorite for high temp service.
