Dear Friends,

Our organisation has established welding procedure specification and supporting procedure qualification record. Recently we have taken new welder. To qualify him based on established procedure, whether radiography test alone sufficient or tensile and bend tests are required. Please suggest me

Hi srisua,

With the belief that you are qualifying welders to AWS D1.1, there is a clause (4.20.1.1) that allows RT inlieu of bends for welder/welder operator qualification, with the exception of GMAW-short circuit mode. RT cannot be substituted for required tensile testing.

Having said that, my preference is for destructive testing as it is a better measure of the welders ability to make a sound weld.

Thank you Section IX
