Dear Friends
As per AWS D1.1-2008- Welder's certification do not have expiry date unless
1) Not welded in process/position exceeding 6 months or due to poor performance.
Back in our yard, respective section will prerpare welder performance record indcating projects involved inclusive process and position qualified for. These records has to be verified and approved by as minimum Section Manager.
Based on the record verification, QA Dept will re-validate the respective cert.We have more than 3500 welders. so obviously not possible to measure their performance by NDE.

Appreciate if someone can share, how in your company/yard monitor and maintain welder performance and continual validation of their initial certification.Do you re-validate the cert. or just update in your welder performance management system. How you actually measure the welders performance?
Thanks

Well, for ASME B&PV Code repair work that I manage for our company, we validate welding process(es) used for all of our qualified welders every 180 days using ASME Section IX guidelines.

What we do by validating the process is the welder has demonstrated use of the process or processes either on previous repair jobs (documented work travelers) or by having the welder go into a weld booth and weld a coupon - no physical or NDT involved.
