Dear All,

We have qualified a two welder in a single specimen(GTAW+SMAW).Qualification thickness will be based on the deposited weld metal thickness or as per the specimen thickness ?

Ie out of 18 mm thk , GTAW - 4mm and SMAW 14 mm . So the GTAW welder qualified for unlimited thickness or 3/4" as per 9.1.3.

Size 6" 18 mm thk

Regards,

Ratheesh N

AWS structural welding code does not have provisions for qualifying a welder with more than one welding process on a single test coupon.

ASME does have provisions for welding with multiple welding processes. The thickness of the deposit for each welding process is the basis of qualifying the the welder. Each process is limited by the thickness deposited by each welding process. Of course we are talking about ASME Section IX, so one much be careful to read the fine print.

Best regards - Al
