I have a slip critical connection which needs to be made in an existing plate. The holes are 2" diameter, so are too large for an A325/A490 bolt.

The erector has suggested using A354 BC or BD rods which appear to have very similar properties to the bolts.

Is anyone aware of any code issues with using this substitution in a non-seismic area?

According to ASTM A354 it specifies grade BD as an acceptable substitute for A490 fasteners over 1-1/2” in diameter or with nonstandard thread lengths. A490 and grade BD have identical minimum tensile and yield properties. Grade BC has higher mechanical criteria than A325 and covers fasteners larger than 1-1/2.

It sounds like your erector is giving you some good advice.

Hope this helps,

Adam

Thanks, I checked the stresses and elongations and they all look similar or better. The only sticking point is that A354 bolts dont require the same level of testing as A325/A490.

In this case it doesnt matter as bolts are sized for existing holes which are much larger than required. If 1 bolt fails then the connection will still work.

If the mag particle testing is important to the structure, a test lab can do this for a couple hundred dollars.

Just curious on what size bolts you are using
on 2 inch diameter holes?

1 7/8" to ensure it is not an oversize hole.

Section J3.1 of the 2005 AISC Spec has some requirements for using A354 rods in slip critical joints, so their use is acceptable to AISC as long as you follow the requirements. The 2005 spec is downloadable from AISC

thanks bjb that is exactly what I am looking for.
