I have brick veneer supported on a 1/2 inch thick plate welded to a wide flange beam. Is there a typical weld pattern for this situation. Can distortion occur to the beam or plate if to much welding is done. Any tips will be appreciated.

Good welders will build the required weld by placing short pieces at intervals and then returning to fill in the gaps, (this keeps the distortion due to heating a localized area to a minimum.) I would use two fillet welds, one on plate overhang to far edge of flange and one at start of cantilever of plate to other side of flange.
