Trouble with coated threads.

If a stud must meet 1/2-13 2A gauge after hot solder dipping , to what spec should the stud be before it gets coated ? Customer wants 2A before and after and we need to undercut to meet the final spec.

How about electroplating instead if that would meet customer electrical as well as corrosion requirements. You can probaly achieve a much better coating thickness control with electroplating than hot dipping.
 
Randi , the customer requires Hot solder dip. The requirement also is that the 1/2 13 be 2A before and after Hsd . To what undercut( minor Diameter ) should the uncoated stud be made ?

In order to answer this question, you need to know what the thickness (minimum and maximum) of the coating is. If you are responsible for engineering this fastener and coating, then specifying an appropriate coating standard is necessary. This will provide details on the coating type, thickness, testing and inspection methods, etc. I am unclear what you mean by "hot solder dipping", so I cannot provide you with any more information.
 
Once you know the coating thickness as noted by TVP, the info and links in thread292-21407 can help you figure out the required preplate dimensions.
