Hello -

I am designing a timber frame structure in a seismic design category D area. The structure will not have light frame wood walls sheathed to provide shear resistance. The structure is two stories with the first floor being a slab and the second floor wood diaphragm.

I would like to use ASCE-7 Chapter 12.14 the simplified seismic design. When reading through the limitations to be met in order to use the simplified design criteria #4 states "The seismic force-resisting system shall be either a bearing wall system or a building frame system, as indicated in Table 12.14-1." Table 12.14-1 does not have timber frames as a SFRS but table 12.2-1 does. This leads me to believe that the the simplified design of section 12.14 is not applicable.

Does anyone have experience with this issue? Any guidance is appreciated.

I agree with you that the simplified method is probably not allowed.

In table 12.2-1 timber frame is listed as a cantilever column system G6 not a bearing wall or building frame system so it doubly does not qualify for simplified method.
