Hi folks,

In timber design, does anyone know how much of a horizontal force is applied to this kind of a connector when there is only vertical load present ? There must be a notional horizontal load defined for such a connection but cannot find it in Eurocode. Has anyone of you seen it defined somewhere ? Would you apply 0.2 % of the vertical ?

If it's not a manufactured part (Simpson here in the States has something similar), then you'd just have to go with statics. Figure out some reasonable erection tolerances that could result in a gap and see what you get. you'll get some rotation in the hanger that will react against the support, and you'll have to have an equal and opposite reaction up at your fastener. If everything is wedged in tight, that force would be reduced to zero.

can you draw me the freebody diagram
