This mold worth $1800?

HI,

I need to make this part, please see attachment. The company quoted me the mold is made of 718 steel, price is $1800. Do you think the price is right? thanks

A lot depends on details not declared, including type of $ but US$1800 is a relatively cheap mould. Size is one factor. Detail, required finish, expected life, cooling channels, ejection details, draft angles required, precision of parts required, material to be moulded all have their influence.

The big thing is whether it works to your satisfaction. Mold making is a lot of science and a lot of art.

I once "saved" money on a mold and then spent a lot of money sorting and hand-working the finished parts.

A littl less money for the first mold, a huge amount of rework and then the second mold.

There are only about a thousand details missing from your post, as Pat alluded to. Also, the square shank, is it a hollow section or solid?

$1800 buys you almost nothing in this day and age as far as tooling goes, especially when constructed of Inco 718. Is there a reason you need such "difficult" material?

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

10,000 pieces only ever or per month or per year.

10,000 only ever is a very small number for injection moulding and the mould to last for such a short run could be even mild steel or aluminium so long as the moulder knows how to set up mould protection and avoid drools that might cause the mould to hob as it is closed.

PC/ABS is reasonably difficult with regards to drool and hobbing the mould as it is a relatively hard plastic and it absorbs water which can increase drool if not dried properly.

PC/ABS is not prone to differential shrinkage or warping so that is one less complication.
