Hi Everyone.

Looking to do a PQR with a 0.50 x 13 threaded stud, welded onto plate per ASME IX. In regards to plate thickness that the stud will be welded too, does it matter? Was looking to do the PQR weld on a 1/2" plate. Also, if it does - what is the range of thickness that is then qualified? It is not an essential variable per QW-261 so I am torn between the allowable being any thickness or that it should follow QW-451.

Thanks in advance!

Interpretation: IX-13-18
Subject: QW-261, Stud Welding Procedure Qualification
Date Issued: August 27, 2013
File: 13-568
Background: The requirements in QW-261, Stud Welding: essential variable QW-402.8 addresses the stud size and shape, and essential variable QW-403.17 addresses base metal and stud metal P-Numbers. However, there are no requirements regarding base metal thickness.

Question: Is the base metal thickness a variable for stud welding?
Reply: No.

Base metal thickness is irrelevant in the eyes of Section IX, so you're "unlimited".

For what its worth, common structural steel codes do not limit qualified thickness maximum, but limit the low end to no less than 1/3 the stud diameter minimum. However, that's more of a design rule than a qualification limit. That is not to say that you won't find a practical min/max within your qualified parameters/equipment setup.
