Stub Column Repair 2

I wanted to have some experienced input on this construction issue. Column supplied are about 11” too short. See attached. What the steel fab want to do is shown in the sketch and what I want to do is also shown. I don’t like the idea of two base plates bolted together, I am recommend an all around weld and I am also wondering if I should bump up the HSS 6x6 by one thickness. The loads are only gravity, no lateral.

I don't see anything wrong with the fabricator's detail, except it looks like a mistake. Also, will the upper plates be embedded in concrete, or just hanging in the air?

Upper plates for the fix are going to be above grade, surrounded by masonry pier (but not encased).

I've seen both. The only difference is the bottom column can be shop welded. Your fix may be more expensive, based on the cost field welding cost. It depends on you, what will make you feel better? If you accept their fix, you may have a barganing chip for something else that could occur on this job...etc.

There are days when I wake up feeling like the dumbest man on the planet, then there are days when I confirm it.

If it will be enclosed in other construction, I see no problem with either detail.

Thanks for the input. I have another question though. In another case, the column is 1” too long so the contractor is wondering if they can sit the column right on top of the pier (omitting the ¼” setting plate and ¾” grout). I have seen prefab building sit right on the piers so I don’t see any structural issues except that grout helps with leveling. Is my understanding correct, or is grout under baseplate required for some other purposes too?

Personally, I would find a tube section that would fit inside the two to serve as a backer bar and field weld the two together full pen.

Agree with Mike. You don't have to have a tube that fits, just require backer bars. For the grout, see your other post.
