This is pretty fundamental to people in this forum but I am not an engineer by trade, I was wondering what the formula for double shear stress in a round pin is, any help would be gratefully received. I know that single shear stress is equal to Load/area, is it true to say that double shear halves the stress due to the doubled area?

The stress is still force divided by area, so doubled area reduces stress by one half.

FYI-Peterson's book has stress concentration factors for the plates in a "close-fitting" pin joint like this Fig 147 & pp135-6
