Stainless Steel Welding without Back Purging

If I back weld a stainless steel joint butt joint with FCAW would I then need to grind, gouge and clean up the opposite side prior to welding? Or should back welding limit the oxidation and sugaring?

Absolutely you need to remove the heat tint/oxidation from back welding with no purge and prepare the opposite side of the weld prep for welding.

yes gouge & clean up up to sound metal.
