Dear all,

For spiral wound gaskets with 304 stainless steel winding material, what sort of certificate has to provide the gasket supplier, just chemical composition or mechanical properties too?
I read over and over the B16.20 and some catalogues from prestigious gasket manufactures and the winding material is only mentioned as stainless steel 304, 316, etc. So, seems that a chemical composition certificate would be suficient.
This story arose when our customer required a certificate as if the winding material were SA 240 Gr 304!
Any suggestions will be very welcomed.
Saludos

JJ

Hi Juancito,
Depending on the application, the gasket has to conform to the referenced standard. I mean, in a severe corrosive application, you might call up the NACE MR 0175 or 0103, hence the winding has to be certified ro ISO 10204 class 3.1 or 3.2. However, in a normal application, I would expect a class 2.2 certification. Also, some specifications like Shell or ESSO, require the PMI to be fully complied with, hence an independent certification for the stainless steel component is a must (class 3.2). Please be a bit more specific to the specification you have to comply with, I hope to give you a bit more insight to your problrm.

Dear GR2vessels,

Thank you for your comment.
The service which these gaskets are intended for is a plain one and there was not specific requirement regarding mats certificates type from our customer. Gaskets were just specified as stainless steel foil plus non asbestos fiber. So, a 2.2 certif. would be suficient. But again, are winding strip mechanical properties a must or not?
That`s the quiz.

No Juancito,
Tthe strip properties are embedded in the m and Y of the gasket and that's all you need to guarantee to the Client, unless as said, a corrosive environment is calling for positive material identification of the SS strips.
