Preparing to qualify weld procedures for Duplex 2205 that must also pass ASTM A923 Practice C. Looking for a handheld digital probe and meter to monitor interpass temperature. Any source suggestions helpful.

Check with your local welding supply company. They sell these crayon type markers. The welder/inspector will mark the steel with this marker and the ink or whatever it is will only show at a given temp. They make different crayons for different temps. I know it sounds wierd, but I ran into a similar problem a few months ago, and I found out about these things.

Thanks for the input. In this specific case the crayons were not recommeneded as they could contaminate the results of the ASTM A923 tests. I found an infrared thermometer with optional probe in stock at McMaster Carr. Most direct probe only meter readings took from 20-120 seconds vs 0.5 seconds for infrared.

Just make sure to have the infrared meter calibrated right for the surface you're investigating. We had a bit of a kerfuffle last year till the inspector realized he had it on a setting more appropriate for concrete.

I agree entireley with HgTX's point - there can be significant discrepancries due to the meter not being calibrated to the surface.

Thanks, this meter does have adjustable emissivity from 0.1-1.0, I noticed some meters are fixed at 0.95. My understanding is that cold rolled steel should be around 0.9 while shinier objects such as stainless steel may be around 0.3. I believe this unit is NIST certified and comes with a separate probe for comparitive reading verification.
