I'm trying to find a cheap laser line scanner or figure out another way to accomplish my objective. In short I need a device that will sense where in a X-Y grid a piece of particulate ranging in size of 1/16" to 1/4" passes through. The area that needs to be scanned is about 16"X16". We are going to use this system in a process to see how certain ducts become jammed. I know there are other was but my boss seems to really want to do this.

Thanks

try bannerengineering.com, sick.com, maybe pepperlfuchs.com, keyence.com

but none of this stuff is "cheap"

Take a look at Cognex Vision Systems especially the Checker Series.

Amazing performance, easy to use and set up and not terribly expensive. Call Cognex and get a demo, it is likely to have no problem giving a "Hit" every time there is a white spec on a black background.

The device you require is called a 'Light Curtain'.
Several manufacturers have them. I have used keyence, but the ones I've seen are all simply presence detectors.
Banner's A-GAGE will suit your application, but you'll need two at right angles to do the cartesian plane function.
