I'm trying to create a view of an assembly where most parts are transparent and a few select parts display normally (shaded with edges). (like This). NX 8 documentation says "Important objects including highlighted objects, are displayed as usual"... But if I highlight objects and click the see-thru button everything becomes see-thru and the highlighted parts remain highlighted. If I deselect the parts after hitting see-thru, they are also displayed as... see-thru. Is there something I am missing here?

Nope, that's the way it works.

There is an older approach where you can explicitly set a 'Partial Shaded' status of individual Components (using the Edit Object Display function) and then in...

Preferences -> Visualization -> Visual

...if you change the Rendering Style from 'Shaded' to 'Partial Shaded', only those Components with the 'Partial Shaded' status toggled ON will be shown as shaded while the rest of your assembly will be shown in 'Static Wireframe' display. Not quite as pleasing as the 'See Thru' mode (I did warn you that this was an 'older approach') but it still works. Note that you may have to perform a Display Regen before actually seeing the new partially shaded display of your assembly.

Wait... how did the people do it in the picture that I linked? The caption on the picture says "See-Thur layers allows....". Is there a way to define the 'important objects'?

If you're working in the context of an assembly and you set the Work Part to be different than the Displayed Part, the Displayed Part goes See-Thru and the Work Part remains normal display (if you look at the ANT displayed in the picture you can see where there's a Work Part set that is different than the Displayed Part). And unless you select a Subassembly as your Work Part, only a single Component will remain in normal shaded display.

BTW, irrespective of the type of 'See Thru' mode chosen, 'See Thru Shell', 'See Thru Original Color Shell' or 'See Thru Layers', this will work as described, it's just that in the 'See Thru Layers' mode you get that 'Visible V-8' look (for those who are old enough to remember that far back, and for the record, yes I had one of those models and it was cool).
