700 tons LPG Ob River in Western Siberia
Via Google Translate:
Russian experts are investigating the site of the accident for possible environmental damage in a fire on an underwater pipeline in Siberia. Initial reports indicated that there were around 700 tons of liquefied gas in the damaged section of the pipeline, official spokesman Andrej Wil said on Sunday. The pipeline's owner, Russian petrochemical giant Sibur, announced the gas leak occurred on Saturday and caused a fire on the frozen Ob River in the oil-rich Khanty-Mansiysk region of western Siberia.

There are “no risks” for the population and the environment, the company said. The cause of the leak is still being investigated, but the incident is under control. According to agency spokesman Wil, however, "statements that indicate the absence of risks to the environment raise serious doubts".

Environmental disasters occur frequently in Russia, often due to outdated infrastructure or negligence. Just last month, the mining giant Norilsk Nickel was fined 1.6 billion euros for spilling thousands of tons of diesel oil into waters in the Russian Arctic in 2020. According to environmentalists, the accident in Norilsk was the worst accident of its kind in the Arctic.

I can believe NO RISK to the population, seeing that it is in Western Siberia. Or maybe not.
But no environmental risks, and under control, I have my doubts.

Yea, nothing to see here, move along.

While it is a NGL pipeline, that might suggest no oil spill per say, just evaporation of the gas to atmosphere. Possibly there was fire damage. Possibly extensive, as cold gas tends to pan out rather than immediately rise before exploding. They apparently still have to see how the repair needs to be done, which hopefully will not involve more methane going to the stratosphere. 700T is a lot of gas. We should be patient for now, rather than proclaiming no risk based on ... nothing. And "under control" does not mean nothing happened here, but hopefully ... nothing did, except for a possibly very, very large cloud of gas is up there floating around somewhere right now. No numbers about methane released.

I think this is propane or butane so will evaporate fairly quickly, even in Siberia.

The reports say liquefied petroleum, but could be anything allowing for translation errors. NGL, Crude, LPG (Propane). Not going to be LNG though.

I think someone in another thread said that Propane freezes at about -40 C, so unless the temp is above that.
Or I could be totally wrong. Just thinking about a liquid gas waiting for the right hot day.

Are these gases "greenhouse gases"? Strange term because climate change could involve lower winter cold temp's.
So how can they say no environmental damage?

I said that because that's what it's boiling point is at atmospheric pressure.

But with global warming it's probably only -20 at this time of year....

They just mean that the LPG will evaporate completely not leaving an oil slick behind

You are right, it is probably NGL CHn or something other than LNG. Highly doubtful it is transporting LNG across Siberia. Good catch. Proof that we don't know much about this story yet.

If burned, they all produce CO2 & H2O. If it gets hit by Northern lights, I dont know what might happen???

(If it vapourizes, it gets cooler still, cools the air it is mixing with, creating a temperature inversion and the mixture hugs the ground until temp equalises or it is forcebly mixed and carried away by wind.)
