Why do you need to measure moisture content in rubber rolls? Are they foam rubber or solid rubber-based?

Sir,
I work at company which deals with remanufacturing cartridges for laser print, these have in structure a rubber rollers ( solid rubber) ; I want to know to what extent the moisture affects the performance of printing and now I´m trying to find a chemical solution to cover the rolls which have superficial defects like : pricks and/or scratches.
in my opinion, theoretical it is impossible because the rubber is vulcanized,
practical ....... we will see ?
