REQUIREMENT OF COOLING TOWER IN WATER COOLED CHILLER SYSTEM

Dear member,

I am working with Petro -chemical plant wherein central colling tower is available for entire plant (process and non -process building). We are purposing water cooled screw chiller based on total thermal load of building for comfort air conditioning for non- process building (i.e. control room, fire control room, central canteen etc ). chilled water supply and return is 44 and 55 deg-F.

Water from central cooling tower is available at supply Pressure of (Min/Normal/Max/Design : 54 / 57 / 64 / 114) in psi and Return pressure of (Min/Normal/Max/Design : 31.5 / 34 / 40 / 114 ) in psi

Supply temperature in Deg-F ( Min/Normal/Design : 82.4 / 91.4 / 149) Return temperature (Max/ Design : 113 / 149 ) at battery limit of each building.

my question is we required separate cooling tower for heat rejection or water from central cooling tower is adequate for heat rejection based on above utility data.

Thank you

What you need to know is flow....

Basically what's the heat rejection / flowrate capacity of the cooling tower versus the duty that everyone else uses.

Ditto flow to everyone else. Wha tis available now won't be the same when you add in another user unless you're only adding 10-20% to the flow

water cooled Screw Chiller of 2nos x 125 TR + 1standby proposed @ chilled water supply/return 44 / 55 deg-F. Heat rejection of cooling tower 312.5 TR considering 25% for compression. Wet bulb temperature for site is 81.5 deg.F . my question is utility condition at battery limit will eliminate the need of separate cooling tower or we required separate cooling tower for heat rejection.

How many TR of heating is the cooling tower operating with now?

You're giving us little snippets of information here, not the whole picture.

For yourself and others draw out a schematic diagram / PFD of the existing cooling water system and we may be able to help you, but there's about 5% of the required information here at the moment.

If you don't shut down on high pressure your cooling capacity will be pretty small when the cooling water temperature is 149F. Is that ok?

Does the central cooling tower really have 312 tons of spare capacity just hanging out waiting for your building?

I can't guess what "battery limit of each building" might mean
