Is there a standard size in taking steel coupons from existing steel members for purposes of determining the tensile strength?

I have typically used in the past, 12" long by 2" wide if possible. If not, 8" long x 1-1/2" wide. Either will allow preparation for a reduced section tensile test where the gauge length will be at least 2". Check ASTM A8 for specifics of coupon testing.

I didn't realize the length dimension would need to be that large. Can you get by with less?

I'll try to round up a copy of ASTM A8.

abp...my apologies...it is E8
