Remelt on Welding Bead

Dear Experts,

With regard to remelt of welding bead (root) using GTAW process, is this acceptable in ASME codes? Please provide me a technical explanation.

There is nothing to prohibit it because you have a root already deposited.

If you have a deposited root and then you remelt prior to filling the joint - no problem as noted by metengr.
However, if by root bead "remelt" you mean getting inside the pipe and "blending" LOF or other defects by remelting the root you will require a repair procedure for most exotic materials as you are adding an additional heat cycle to the weld.
