Question regarding the sprinkling of elevator equipment rooms...

I have a situation I have recently encountered regarding the sprinkling of elevator equipment rooms above the highest occupiable floor for NFPA 13 systems. It has always been conjecture, at least in the sprinkler industry in Florida, that elevator equipment rooms above the highest occupiable floor do not need to be sprinkled. In all of my years coming up in the industry I heard that from designers, salesman, fitters, etc.. and I took it as gospel. Even AHJ's and fire marshalls agreed with me that that was pretty much code. The problem is is that I cannot find anywhere whatsoever that that is even true. I cannot even find any mentioning of elevator equipment rooms in NFPA 13, 101, or 1. I have researched many portions of the Florida Elevator Code and have not found anything specific regarding it. It is now being brought up by a building owner of an existing building who was questioned by a city inspector during an elevator inspection. The elevator equipment room in this case is not sprinkled. Is this a non-code made up and adopted by the industry and some AHJ's or is there something concrete that I have overlooked ?

The last time I had to deal with this required me to purchase and read the ASME/ANSI Elevator Code. I believe the answer lies in ASME A17.1.

This document is specific to Wisconsin, but it does provide some pretty good guidelines on what is required for different types of elevators.

Obviously this will vary from state to state (or county to county) depending upon what codes the governing authority has adopted.
