PQR: SMAW + SAW
Test coupon thickness (base metal) of PQR is 46mm
Deposited Weld metal thickness: SMAW-20mm, SAW-26mm.

ASME IX is used for the welding procedure qualification.

WPS: SMAW

My questions:

(1) What is the qualified thickness range for base metal in WPS? 5-200mm or 5-40 mm? why?

(2) What is the maximum qualified deposited weld metal thiciness in WPS? 200mm or 40mm?

ASME TABLE QW451.1 is used for the thickness qualification.

Ok. For procedure qualification you need to first search through Article II and then Article IV. In Article II you should review the list of essential variables to make sure that you have no exceptions regarding specific welding process.

Once you have performed this go to Article IV and begin reviewing Table QW-451 for weld coupon thickness ranges and weld deposit thickness inclusing all applicable Notes.

For a coupon 46mm in thickness, your base metal thickness range for this procedure is from 5mm to 200mm. For the weld deposit thickness for SMAW and SAW it is up to 200mm for each process because you have deposited greater than 19mm with any one process.

The reason I asked this question is only SMAW used in WPS. Howerver, PQR has two combined welding processes: SMAW + SAW.

In this case, the qualified thickness of base metal in WPS is also from 5mm to 200mm. The deposited weld metal thickness is 200mm. right?

Why the qualified thickness range is not based on deposit weld metal thickness of SMAW in PQR?

Yes, correct.

The qualification of base metal thickness range is treated somewhat differently in comparison to weld deposit thickness range because the Code committee recognizes that a WPS can be supported by single or multiple PQR's to provide flexibility for a combination of weld processes, and to optimize the use of weld coupons.
