pump seems catastrophically

Pump seems catastrophically damaged due to operating dry. Please help me to find possible failure causes and suggest prevention actions needed to not let such failure happen again.
Questions:
1. How do you know the pump is catastrophically damaged? You used the word "seems", maybe someone just turned if off.
2. What is the commodity? Is it water, oil, peanut butter or what?
3. What are the normal operating conditions (pressure and temperature)?
4. Where is the pump located? Is it on grade? Is it elevated above grade? Is it below grade in a pit? Is it on an offshore platform?
5. What is the suction source? Is it an elevated tank? A grade level tank? is it a well or other source below the pump?
6. What is the NPSHr for the pump?
7. What is the suction line size?
What is the discharge line size?
8. What kind of pump is it?
Do you get the picture?

Just polishing the crystal ball now - will be back with answers following a reading.
However, in the interim - if damaged from running dry it seems as though there wasn't any product available for the pump, why is this so, who knows - we certainly don't, only you can give the answer (maybe the crystal ball will help).
It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)
