Hello,

I understand it is necessary to ground / bond pressure vessels (ASME Sec VIII) so the static electricity can be dissipated. In API 572 it provides some good practices on checking bonding cable connections. My question is that if a pressure vessel is only bolted to concrete pilers/pads that are in ground, will this be considered sufficient grounding?

I can't seem to find a straight answer from codes and it seems different owners have different tastes.

IrwinL, I'd not think a concrete pier would provide sufficient ground. The vessel fabricator usually provides a ground lug, usually on the support(s), the sparkies take it from there :)

Have been through the exercise of working out the grounding provided by the reinforcing in the vessel foundation. Sometimes it is enough.
but I agree with SnTMan, leave it to the electrical engineers to sort it out. But if you are paying the project bills, you can give them push to work it and not default to a conservative (expensive) grounding solution.
 
For additional guidance API RP 2003 discusses tank grounding for static control. (2005 edition)

Grounding depends on fluids handled. You should clarify class of fluid.
