That was true on day one. What took a long time to figure out was how to break the news that it was too expensive.

What they needed to figure out is how not to put another one in the ocean.

So repairing even a seriously damaged example could be cheaper than buying a brand-new one.”

Obviously, anything of potential value... salvage, re-build or spare parts... would have been stripped-off ASAP... long before being the structure was 'demilitarized' [cut-up].
