Open an Autorecover file.

Hi All,

How do you open an autorecovered file without a system crash?

I opened an autorecovered file after a crash but somehow I didn't save it properly and the file is still in the state it was when I opened it this morning.

Go to Tools > Options > System Options > Backup/Recover and see where the files are being stored. You should be able to open SW files from there in the normal manner.

I tried doing that and it gave me an error. Are you able to just open up an autorecover file like you would a backup file?

To be honest, I don't know. The backup/copy files in the TempSWBackupDirectory can be opened up, but I don't have any files in the swxauto folder to be able to check.

What extension do they have?

Mine is showing a .sldprt extension now. But at the time the filesize was only 10kb so I think it was more of a placeholder than an actual backup.

You can not open an auto-recover file in the normal manner. The only chance you have to open this file is if you are prompted to open it when you're opening Solidworks for the first time following the crash.

sldwkmin is right... you must crash to open up a autocovery file. If you setup a backup directory and set a backup then you can get a backup version and open it as needed.
